Poręba - design and construction of a treatment plant with the technology of the future
24.03.2021

On 26 February 2021, an contract was signed for "Modernization of the sewage treatment plant in Poręba in the design and build system". The contract gross value is PLN 8,671,500.00. The subject-matter of the contract is the preparation of complete design documentation and expansion of an existing sewage treatment plant with a new technological line in modern MBR technology - up to a nominal capacity of 866 m3 / day and 5413 PE. The works are scheduled to be completed on 31 August 2022.

Co-financing from the Regional Operational Program of the Śląskie Voivodeship

The implementation of the task would not be possible without the efforts of Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Wodociągów i Kanalizacji sp.z o.o. in Poręba, which in a record time managed to successfully pass all stages of the competition verification and receive high funding for the implementation of such an important investment for the City of Poręba and its inhabitants.

The task will be performed as part of the project co-financed by the Regional Operational Program of the Śląskie Voivodeship for 2014-2020, priority axis V Environmental protection and effective use of resources, action 5.1 Water and sewage management, sub-action 5.1.1 Water and sewage management - ITI and Competition no. RPSL.05.01.01-IŻ.01-24-329 / 19.

Total value of the project: PLN 9 134 545.28.
Total co-financing amount: PLN 7,056,824.20
- co-financing from the ERDF: PLN 6,314,000.60,
- co-financing from the State budget from the Territorial Contract: PLN 742 823.60.

The quality of sewage after treatment - MBR treatment plant

Protection of the environment and resources for future generations

It should be emphasized that the European Union requires that projects co-financed by ROP WSL 2014-2020 must primarily implement the EU strategy for smart growth and sustainable development. The natural environment is currently used very intensively which has led to the need to develop strategies which would minimize the use of resources and preserve them for future generations. The sustainable growth strategy is an attempt to combine the implementation of these two goals.

This means that only projects that are successfully verified in terms of meeting the following requirements can be co-financed:
  • supporting sustainable development,
  • minimizing the impact of human activity,
  • effective and rational management of resources,
  • adaptation to climate change and alleviating the impact of its effects,
  • protection of biodiversity,
  • accelerating the processes of environmental recovery wherever there has been an imbalance.

Wastewater treatment plant with the technology of the future

All the above goals will be achieved thanks to the application of the MBR (Membrane Biological Reactor) technology, which is the best possible wastewater treatment technology - the so-called BAT technology - within the meaning of the IPCC Directive. Thanks to the combination of activated sludge technology and microfiltration with the use of membrane modules, the modernized sewage treatment plant in Poręba will meet the highest safety and environmental standards, also in the field of removing micro-pollutants such as microplastics and pharmaceuticals.

The unique benefits of using MBR technology include:
  • the quality of the treated sewage is comparable to the first class of purity of flowing water, due to which the quality of water in the receiving body is improved,
  • thanks to the excellent quality of the treated sewage, it is possible to re-use it after disinfection with a UV lamp for purposes such as cleaning, irrigation, etc. - which saves valuable water resources. Poland is one of the countries with the lowest drinking water resources per capita in Europe, therefore, in accordance with the EU regulation, from 2023 Poland will be obliged to recover water from wastewater. MBR technology allows to meet all the requirements set by the regulation - it meets the quality requirements of the best reclaimed water, i.e. class A, which can even be reused in agriculture. The chart below shows a comparison of the quality of the sewage treated by a treatment plant of this technology along with the water from the Kasinianka Stream - as you can see, the quality of the treated sewage is several times higher than the quality of the water in the stream:

Comparison of the quality of sewage treated by the MBR treatment plant in Kasina Wielka with the quality of water in the Kasinianka Stream

  • the highest removal of microplastics and pharmaceuticals from sewage among the commonly used wastewater treatment technologies, thus minimizing the negative impact of these substances on organisms living in the aquatic environment and preventing the risk of bacteria and viruses becoming resistant to drugs and antibiotics,
  • removal of viruses and pathogenic bacteria from wastewater, which is particularly important in the times of the coronavirus pandemic and the protection of human health and life movement,
  • no odors – due to the advanced deodorization systems,
  • control of the sewage treatment plant in automatic mode. There is no need for the constant presence of personnel. There is an option for the so-called remote supervision by any device with Internet access,
  • electricity savings and minimization of the sewage treatment plant operating costs, thanks to the use of gravity flow (reducing the number of pumps and valves) and the use of renewable energy sources.

General Contractor - Schwander Polska Sp. z o.o. sp. k.

The General Contractor of the investment is Schwander Polska sp.z o.o. sp. k., with several years of experience in the design and construction of MBR wastewater treatment plants and biological water regeneration (reuse of treated wastewater). Currently, the company's portfolio includes over 30 built MBR treatment plants. Below you can find some examples of completed investments.
