SCHWANDER POLSKA CONFERENCE IN POREC (CROATIA)
04.12.2019

Istria – tourist region with wastewater issues

The event location was chosen for a reason – during the last few months there has been an ongoing debate regarding the water and wastewater management in the region. Heated discussion was evoked mainly by the media reports about the pollution in the form of wastewater stain in the Adriatic sea near Peroj, which was visible from space. Representatives of local governments and specialists were invited to attend the event to learn more about effective and innovative ways of wastewater treatment.

Treated wastewater reuse for huge money savings

The conference started with a lecture of a scientist from the University of Zagreb, which provided an analysis of the current situation in Croatia. The main identified problems included lack of wastewater treatment plants, dated technologies and ineffective wastewater treatment systems, which, as a consequence, have led to the hazardous mutations and a formation of dangerous superbacteria.

The representatives of Schwander Polska have presented the advantages of their technology, stressing the fact that the MBR technology eliminates not only all of the bacteria and most viruses, but also is perfect for applications with seasonal fluctuations of the amount of the wastewater inflowing to the wastewater treatment plant (as in Croatia during tourist season). Furthermore, Schwander Polska presented projects which include treated water reuse systems, for example the wastewater treatment plant for Bania Hotel**** Thermal and Spa, which uses treated wastewater after additional UV disinfection for artificial snowmaking in winter, watering of green areas in summer and other technological purposes throughout the year. In Mediterranean climate, the above-mentioned solutions would enable for huge money savings for the operators of the plants.

Challenges of public procurement procedure in Croatia

The differences between public procurement procedures in Poland and Croatia was another topic for a heated debate. Due to the red tape and complicated public procurement procedures for years tenders have been cancelled. Presentation of Polish tender procedures was aimed at showing how the exact same issues were addressed in Poland, in order to effectively utilise EU financing resources.

There have been several extremely interesting presentations delivered by Schwander Polska’s Partner Companies –Alfa Laval, Hach, Kaeser Compressoren or Omega S.A., which offers the technology of processing sludge from biological wastewater treatment plants into the organic-mineral fertiliser “Oskar”.
